FAQ

What Is Psychotherapy?

In psychotherapy, a change in behavior and perspective is the goal. The relationship between you and the psychotherapist is very important for the success of therapy. During the sessions, you will work hard towards new awareness and insight that can change your experiences and the way that you respond and make choices. Practicing these new behaviors can change others behaviors. These different behaviors can lead to new experiences that then lead to taking healthier actions, change, and growth.

I have never been in therapy, what can I expect?

I will speak with you on the telephone prior to the first session to arrange the initial consultation. In the first session I will learn a little about what brings you to psychotherapy and discuss the beginning of a treatment plan.

My priority is to provide a high quality of psychological service to you. For this reason, the first session is dedicated to getting better insight into the issues that you are seeking help for, understanding who you are, and starting to build a trusting relationship. During the first session, I will ask, "What brings you in and what are you hoping I can do to help you?" These questions help guide and define what you need from psychotherapy.

It is normal to feel nervous during your first couple of sessions. However, I will be helping you to feel as comfortable as I can. We will be working together to set goals and objectives for you to reach while I provide a supportive encouraging environment.

My therapeutic style is direct and interactive. You will be expected to be engaged in your treatment to the best of your ability. My role is to help you define what you want to achieve in therapy, improve your self-awareness, and provide guidance, knowledge, and support. I also am open to any feedback you may have in regards to how you feel about the psychotherapy or what needs to happen within your sessions. The average number of sessions for treatment is 8. It varies depending on the psychological issues, commitment to treatment, and the therapeutic relationship. Some psychological issues require more time while others require less. This is determined by your progress.

If I participate in psychotherapy, am I crazy or have severe psychological problems?

No. People who participate in psychotherapy are not crazy. The vast majority of individuals in psychotherapy are dealing with issues that they are not familiar with and need guidance and understanding in how to cope with them. Most people who feel crazy are not truly "crazy", but overwhelmed.

What is the cost of psychotherapy?

I believe that psychological services should be as widely available as possible. To help make this possible, I am on insurance panels. If you do not want to use your insurance or do not have insurance that covers mental health, you can speak to Dr. Reigle about her fees. You will be expected to pay your session fee or your insurance co-pay, if you have insurance. All insurance companies have a multitude of plans. You will be responsible for knowing what your outpatient mental health benefits specifically are for you.

How do I use my health insurance to help pay for psychotherapy?

You need to check your insurance coverage by calling your insurance company directly, using their on-line services or consulting your human resources representative. You will need to ascertain important information including deductibles, rates of co-payment, and whether Dr, Reigle is a provider for your insurance company. If your insurance will deny payment and you will be responsible for the hourly rate.

Medical and mental health copay's are not always the same!

What are the benefits and risks of psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can have some benefits and risks. The benefits of psychotherapy include better relationships, solutions to problems, improved self-awareness, and self-confidence and as well as a decrease in feelings of distress. However, at times psychotherapy may involve talking about uncomfortable parts of your life. This can lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration, nervousness, anger, and helplessness. Dr. Reigle cannot guarantee you will receive benefit because no psychotherapist can. This is because of the differences in how individuals respond to psychotherapy.

What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

Psychologists hold a doctorate degree (PhD). Training and education includes graduate study for at least six years in human behavior, therapeutic treatment of psychological issues, personality theory, psychological test construction and administration, experimental research, statistical analysis of data, and a clinical internship. Psychologists have the most rigorous graduate training in theories and techniques of psychotherapy among mental health professionals.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (M.D.s) who are trained and educated in medical school with at least four additional of clinical training. The medical training gives psychiatrists an understanding of medical and emotional issues. Psychiatrists have knowledge of medication as well as its effects and limitations. Among mental health professionals, only psychiatrists evaluate patients for a specific medication and prescribe drugs.

Can I do anything to help therapy move quickly?

You can keep your regularly scheduled appointments. Also, do any homework assignment and/or give thought to what was discussed in your prior sessions. Be open and honest with Dr. Reigle, especially if you feel you are not making improvements. Last, speak your mind as freely as you can and ask whatever questions you need.

What about my confidentiality?

There are laws protecting your privacy in psychotherapy Without your consent, or a court order, no information can be shared. However there are times when sharing privileged information is beneficial to the client, such as when consulting with physicians for medically related issues, or in the case of children, with school personnel for school-related issues. In these type of events, we will discuss the purpose of the communication, what information will be shared, and we will work together to determine the appropriate form of contact. You will be required to sign an authorization to release information form that designates the specific information to be communicated.

Also, by law, Dr. Reigle is required to report suspected child abuse or elderly abuse to the Department of Family and Children Services. If Dr. Reigle determines that a patient presents a serious danger of violence to another, she may be required to take notify potential victim, and/or contacting the police, and/or seeking hospitalization for the patient.
